Frequently Asked Questions
| Is this a genuine Garrett turbocharger? | Yes. This is a new Garrett OEM exhaust-gas turbocharger supplied in original manufacturer packaging. |
| What is the main part number? | The main reference is 776599-5010S (Garrett designation GTB4294). |
| What engine uses the GTB4294? | It is used on selected MTU / Detroit Diesel Series 1600 (S1600) generator-set applications with the 21.0 L, 12-cylinder diesel engine. |
| Does this turbo have an actuator or VGT? | No. It is a fixed-geometry, twin-scroll turbocharger supplied without an actuator. |
| What are common signs of turbocharger failure? | Loss of power, excessive exhaust smoke, whining or whistling noise, oil leaks, high oil consumption or slow boost response may indicate a turbocharger problem. |
| Should the engine be diagnosed before replacing the turbo? | Yes. Professional diagnostics of the oil supply, air intake and exhaust system are strongly recommended before replacement. |
| Is professional installation recommended? | Yes. Correct installation and a clean oil supply are essential for correct operation and long service life. |
Common Symptoms of Turbocharger Failure
Loss of engine power, slow or laggy boost response, excessive black, blue or grey exhaust smoke, whining or whistling noise, high oil consumption, oil leakage at the turbo seals, abnormal noise from the turbine or compressor, or boost pressure faults may indicate problems within the turbocharger.
These symptoms may also be caused by a clogged air filter, blocked or leaking intercooler, restricted oil feed, contaminated engine oil, exhaust leaks, boost-pressure sensor faults or other engine management problems.
Professional diagnostic testing is strongly recommended before replacing any turbocharger.
Important Diagnostic and Installation Information
Before replacing the turbocharger, a professional inspection should be performed, including oil-feed and oil-return inspection, air-intake and intercooler inspection, exhaust system inspection, boost-pressure testing, air-filter inspection and engine oil quality analysis.
If the previous turbocharger failed due to oil starvation, oil contamination or foreign-object damage, the oil feed pipe, oil return pipe, oil filter, air intake and intercooler should also be inspected and cleaned before installing the replacement turbocharger.
Installing a new turbocharger into a contaminated oil system or restricted air intake may result in repeat failure and additional engine damage.
