How to Identify the Correct Diesel Injector by Part Number

Ordering the wrong diesel injector is an expensive mistake. Two injectors can look almost identical yet be calibrated completely differently, and fitting the wrong one can cause rough running, poor economy, or a no-start. The safest way to get the right part is to order by the injector's own part number. This guide explains where to find that number, how the major manufacturers structure their numbers, and what the extra codes on the injector actually mean.

Why the part number matters more than the vehicle

It is tempting to order an injector using only the car's make, model, and year. On modern common rail engines that is not reliable. The same model can be fitted with different injector versions across production years, engine codes, and emissions specifications. The part number stamped on the injector removes that guesswork: it identifies the exact component the manufacturer built. Always order by the number on the part, and use the vehicle details only as a cross-check.

Where to find the injector part number

The part number is laser-etched or printed on the body of the injector, usually along the metal shaft or on a flat near the solenoid or piezo head. On many injectors you will see two groups of characters: a longer part number that identifies the injector type, and a shorter alphanumeric calibration code near the electrical connector. If the injector is still on the engine, you may be able to read it without full removal, but the cleanest reading comes from a removed, wiped-down injector.

Bosch injector numbering

Bosch is the most common brand you will encounter, and its numbering is well structured.

A Bosch common rail injector part number is normally ten digits, traditionally starting with "0 445". The next digits identify the family. Numbers in the 0 445 110 and 0 445 111 series are typically solenoid passenger-car and light commercial injectors (CRI), while the 0 445 120 series covers heavier commercial and industrial injectors (CRIN). Piezo injectors (CRI3) fall into the 0 445 115, 0 445 116, 0 445 117 and 0 445 118 families; for example the 0 445 118 series is used on some BMW 3.0-litre diesels. Piezo injectors are a different technology from the solenoid 0 445 110 units and are generally not interchangeable with them.

Watch for the prefix. A number that begins with "0 986 435" is a Bosch factory-remanufactured (exchange) injector, the reman equivalent of a new 0 445 unit. Late-model common rail parts can also appear with an "F00" prefix. Importantly, the same physical injector can have two Bosch numbers: one supplied directly to the vehicle manufacturer (OE) and one supplied through the Bosch aftermarket network. This is why a cross-reference lookup matters.

Delphi and Denso numbering

Delphi (now PHINIA) and Denso use their own numbering systems, and their injectors also carry an OE number issued by the vehicle manufacturer. Because the on-part number and the OE number differ, the reliable approach with these brands is to read the number printed on the injector and cross-reference it to the OE number and to any aftermarket equivalents. Do not assume a Delphi or Denso injector matches a Bosch one just because it fits the same engine; the calibration and internals are different. When in doubt, match the exact on-part number first, then confirm against the OE cross-reference for your engine code.

Injectors by vehicle and application type

Common rail injectors are not only for cars. The same part-number logic applies across every diesel application, and buyers search for each type differently. Knowing which family fits which application helps you confirm the right part.

Passenger cars and vans (light commercial) usually run Bosch solenoid CRI injectors in the 0 445 110 and 0 445 111 series, or piezo CRI3 units (0 445 115 to 0 445 118) on many premium and larger-capacity engines. Typical searches: "injector for VW 2.0 TDI", "1.6 HDi injector", "BMW 3.0d piezo injector".

Trucks and heavy commercial vehicles (HGV) typically use the heavier-duty Bosch CRIN family, the 0 445 120 series, running at higher pressures. OE coverage here includes names such as MAN, Volvo, Mercedes, Cummins and others. Typical searches: "CRIN injector", "truck common rail injector", "0445120 injector".

Off-highway and agricultural machinery, tractors, combine harvesters, excavators, wheel loaders, backhoes and other construction equipment, also runs the CRIN 0 445 120 family, because these engines share the same medium-to-heavy-duty injection platform as trucks. Typical searches: "tractor injector", "excavator diesel injector", "off-highway CRIN injector", "agricultural common rail injector".

Marine engines (inboard diesel, workboats) and stationary power such as generator sets (gensets) are likewise served by the CRIN platform, often the same 0 445 120 references adapted for the application. The practical point is the same in every case: identify the application, then match the exact part number on the injector. A truck, a tractor, an excavator and a genset can share the same CRIN injector reference, and the number on the part is what confirms it, not the machine it came out of. The extra code: IMA, IQA, and ISA calibration codes

Near the electrical connector many injectors carry a short alphanumeric code, typically six to ten characters (for example 8ZSH5WH). Bosch calls this the IMA, IQA, or ISA code; the underlying term is Injector Menge Abgleichung, meaning injection quantity adjustment.

This code is a calibration value. It tells the engine ECU the tiny manufacturing tolerances of that specific injector so the ECU can fine-tune the exact fuel quantity and timing. It does not, on its own, identify which injector to buy, but it is essential after fitting: on most modern engines a new or reman injector must have its calibration code programmed into the ECU (a process called coding or IMA/IQA coding). If the code is not entered correctly, the engine can run roughly even with the correct part fitted.

The practical takeaway: use the main part number to order the correct injector, and record the calibration code so it can be coded to the ECU during installation.

A simple step-by-step to get it right

Read the full part number from the injector body and write it down exactly, including spaces and prefixes. Note the shorter calibration code separately. Identify the brand from the number format (0 445 / 0 986 435 for Bosch, or the Delphi/Denso format). Cross-reference the number to confirm the OE equivalent and any aftermarket alternatives for your engine code. Confirm it matches your engine and emissions specification, not just the model name. Finally, when fitting, make sure the installer programs the calibration code into the ECU.

Common mistakes to avoid

Ordering by vehicle model alone, without the part number. Confusing the calibration code with the part number. Assuming brands are interchangeable on the same engine. Ignoring the OE-versus-aftermarket dual numbering on Bosch parts. And forgetting to code the new injector to the ECU after fitting.
